Cat Who Came for Christmas Cleveland Amory 9780552164108 Books

If you are a cat person, this book is a must for you. If you are not, it may give you insight on why we cat people love cats so much. One Christmas Eve, Cleveland Amory rescued a dirty, injured cat from a New York City alley. He took it to his apartment and concluded that the cat had never known human affection before. The cat tried frantically to escape, but Amory left out food, water and litter box, and went to bed. The next morning, he awoke to find the cat by his bed, staring at him. "Aeiou," the cat said. "Ow, yourself," Amory replied. "Merry Christmas." This began a touching friendship between cat and curmudgeon. Amory will entertain you with the many traits that he discovers about this big, white cat. Cats like routine and security. Cats do not like to travel, especially on airplanes. Cats do not like new objects or new people. Cats do not like dogs, other cats, or snakes. Above all, cats do not like vacuum sweepers. My cat, Duchess, feels exactly the same. The thing that she does like is to cuddle up close and purr until she goes to sleep. Amory talks to his cat throughout the book. Don't conclude that this is silly. I talk to my cat, and from her reactions I get the creepy feeling that she understands more than I would have imagined. Cats are among the most intelligent of mammals, but they did not evolve speech, so they will devise surprising charades to communicate with you. Amory not only entertains us in this book, he also shows the cat as a creature with feelings, expecially the feeling of affection.

Enchanting story.
If you love cats, you will enjoy this book. Great, and safe gift for cat lovers. Not sad. No one dies in this book.
Completes my collection, tho a bit raggedy.
Touching, amusing, and educational book from the sometimes caustic pen of the late, witty and steadfast Cleveland Amory, writer and animal activist. Polar Bear, a large, white tom, whom Mr.Amory rescued at Christmas, will always remian in my heart. My own involvement with animal causes began with this book. Even my friends who are not prone to animal stories liked this one. Enjoy and rejoice; there are sequels!
I love this book. Was happy to find it. I had loaned my original one out and was glad to get another copy. I have all his books about this cat.
Nancy Hardwick
This is the first in a series of three books written by Cleveland Amory who, to me, is a hilarious writer, especially about his cat Polar Bear who he rescued on one Christmas Eve. The goings on between the two of them will keep you, if not laughing aloud, at least smiling. So any cat lover like me is going to enjoy this book tremendously as Mr. Amory talks about his adventures and tremendous love of, and for, Polar Bear. He also goes off on riffs about other things as well like all the crochity people he's had dealings with and about himself whom he says is one of those people. The book is just delightful
"An Enjoyable Read", would be my description of the Cat Who Came for Christmas. I heard Paul Harvey talk about The Cat and the Curmudgeon, the follow up to this book. I wanted to start at the beginning and, ergo, the reason for this choice. I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Armory's style. I found the cat's antics (catventures?) amusing as well as the author's manner of delving into an animal's psyche. His interweaving of cat tails with social commentary was, for me, a different way of expressing political commentary. To those of us who may consider ourselves also curmudgeons, it introduces a gentler side of a genre often discounted or looked upon with suspicion. As I said, a nice read while sipping a glass or cup of your choice. Now, I guess it's time to sit down and explore the further adventures of Polar Bear as I ready myself the sequel.
