While I don’t know enough to judge this work on merits of historical content, I can say that it’s detailed characters brought history to life. Some of the segments lagged a bit, but there was a lot of ground to cover. If you enjoy history, or narratives of strong women, this is a good book.

Compelling! Puts you right in the milieu of the 12th century! Loved reading about a strong woman in medieval times. Hated for it to be over!
I've read a lot about Matilda, since the genealogists told me, convincingly, that she's my 26th great-grandmother. So when Arin's novelistic version of her life took a lot of liberties with what I thought I already know, I was sufficiently put off to put the book down without finishing it. To my way of thinking, the Empress Maud was a sufficiently scandalous wielder of medieval power that one shouldn't feel obliged to exaggerate that side of the story.
Not great. A slow read for me.
I love historical fiction, especially if it has historical integrity. I am interested in this period of English history but very disappointed in the silly fictional sexual obsession of Mathilda for her rival. Totally ridiculous and distracting from what could have been interesting about a period where little is explored except among very focused scholars. Not only that, the writing was on the level of bodice rippers. Without any real sensuality.
There is nothing comparable to the research and attention to detail. A beautifully written and stunningly well thought out book. Brava.
I truly love historical fiction and this did not disappoint! I loved how involved I became with the characters and the story. I can’t believe that the author had trouble getting this published!
I love this book! It definitely appealed to my love of historical fiction and drew me in from the beginning. I knew very little about the Empress Matilda and this book fueled my desire to learn more. I felt like it gave an honest portrayal of life during those times, how marriage was about combining power, rather than love. Love was often found elsewhere and was often unrequited. All in all, a powerful novel that was immensely fun to read!
