SYNOPSIS: Sonnet Gray is 18 years old, and is tired of moving around with her family. Her family, however, doesn't just move locations.

They move throughout time.

Her mismatched "family" are all Lost, special people who randomly jump throughout time, never knowing when they'll leave their current era or where they'll end up. Sonnet only has her dad left as her real family, and then all the other people who are Lost like them. Her mother committed suicide, and her sister, Rose was left behind somewhere in the fifteenth century.

Sonnet her her family have landed in the twenty-first century, and begin the process of blending in and surviving. Sonnet takes up a job as a barista to help feed the family, and plays her guitar in her off-hours. She meets other Lost too. Emme, a woman with a questionable line of work, and Israel, a young doctor. After one of Sonnet's performances, she meets Luke, a normal photographer, and begins to fall hard for him. How can she fall in love when every night, she and her family could wake up in a whole new place? Ghosts and new people lurk around every corner. Who can be trusted?

REVIEW: Unfortunately, I got busy and put the book down for a few months. This wasn't the book's fault!

I was really interested in this book because of the concept of people who jump through time. Most hooks in a book a more a gift than a curse, such as being able to control jumping through time as opposed to this. This curse also made hearing the history of Sonnet much more interesting. It was also interesting to hear how the Lost were a society, but never met, and took up others like them to make a patchwork family while others leave their band for other things. It reminded me of nomads

I also loved that the dad was an alcoholic, trying to cope with the loss of his wife and other daughter. I'm a sucker for a dark realistic element.

However, the first part of the book was slow. No real action or drama, just average. Afterward, the plot twists started coming and it got much more interesting. I was enthralled!

I get finicky about character descriptions. They need to be done early and thorough, or not at all, because the reader will have gone on to create their own image in their mind. I complain most about Israel. I never got a clear image of the tall, African-American man. Not that I am a racist, but its harder for me to picture other characters of a different ethnicity, or to maintain the image.

All in all, a good book to curl up to. Give it a chance and you'll be hooked, wanting more at the end!

This is a great read. The plot is consistent and the pace keeps you interested throughout the book. The characters are well defined for the parts that they play. This was a gift from a friend and I am glad that I am able to read something different than my normal genre of reading.

There are slight issues with the electronic edition with skipped pages and a few syntax errors - but this does not detract from the overal quality of the book.
Love love LOVE THIS BOOK! I love a good time travel story plot, but the specifics of the way the Lost travel in time and space really stuck out to me. All the characters were extremely well developed, even the characters that you get to know almost solely through flashbacks. The crazy search for a little sister left in time and space really tugs at the heartstrings. The revelation of what REALLY happened is even better.

I didn't know this book was part of a series and felt a little cheated at the end...and then came the included first few pages of the second book. I might actually plonk down my hard earned cash to learn what happens next!
I enjoyed this book for its somewhat different twist on time travel and its nicely rounded characters.

I won't say it stayed with me, nor is it particularly thought-provoking. But if you're looking for a good escapist jaunt, you might enjoy it. One complaint is that instead of a climactic ending, it sort of fizzles. You get the sense that you're supposed to buy the next in the series to find out if the drama reaches new heights. Still, not bad.
Beautifully written and ok for teens and preteens to read! Attention grabbing for all ages. Unique from other books and picks up history things that make you go look up history. Now just wish the series would continue.
I'm a huge fan of time travel stories and Shadows Gray puts a unique spin on the subject. The book is full of wit, insights and fascinating characters -- you'll feel like you know them. Strongly recommended.
The mark of a good book is when I can't stop thinking of the characters, long after I've stopped reading, or I can't wait to get through my busy day just to get lost, no pun intended, in it. Both Williams' books, Shadows Gray and Shadows Falling had this effect on me. Another mark of a great book is the heightened imagery that sucks you into the world of the story and its characters...Better than watching a good movie (and yes, this trilogy would be great on the big screen). If you love a bit of magical realism, just the right amount of romance, not an overdose of sci-fi, but time travel as an interesting backdrop, and familial issues woven throughout, this is your book. The author's wit is imbued in the characters and her interest in history made for an interesting and authentic read. i did catch a few typos in the first book (none in the second) but that seems to be expected from a book without a huge publisher.....i did notice that her writing matured exponentially in the second book and that just makes me that much more excited to get my hands on the latest book due out soon.
I love to read. I love to get so lost in a story that the lines between fact and fiction get blurred. Shadows Gray did that for me. Not your typical time travel storyline, the Lost drift through time without an anchor to any particular time period nor any control over it. The main character, Sonnet, was my favorite. Her patchwork family of both blood relatives and strays picked up along the way were bonded over their unusual circumstances.
I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series. Though written for a young adult audience, this middle aged mom found it an engaging and entertaining read.
